A bill that would have allowed police to impound vehicles with improper window tinting was withdrawn at Wednesday’s Hawaii County Council meeting, as promised by a council member last week.
Hilo Councilwoman Sue Lee Loy requested that Bill 64, which would have amended a county traffic law to allow the police to cite and remove cars with improper window tints, be removed from the agenda. She told the Tribune-Herald last week that she intended to postpone or withdraw the bill.
Lee Loy, who introduced the bill, said the measure generated complaints from operators of tow companies, who told her there already is insufficient space to store impounded vehicles under current laws and that the bill would only exacerbate the issue. Lee Loy said she hoped to refine the bill before bringing it before the council again in the future.
